The Backup Process

The process generally follows a three-step cycle:

  1. Data Identification: The system scans the designated files, databases, or entire operating systems that require protection.

  3. Storage: The processed data is moved to a secondary location, which could be a local physical drive, an off-site server, or a cloud-based storage environment.

Types of Backups

Understanding the common methods helps in choosing the right strategy for your needs:

  • Full Backup: Captures a complete copy of all selected data. While it is the most comprehensive method, it consumes the most storage and time.
  • Incremental Backup: Only copies the data that has changed since the last backup operation. This is highly efficient and saves significant storage space.
  • Differential Backup: Captures all data changes made since the last full backup. It sits between full and incremental backups in terms of speed and storage requirements.

A robust backup strategy—following the 3-2-1 rule (three copies of data, on two different media types, with one copy kept off-site)—is the industry standard for maintaining business continuity and personal data security.
